Illinois Unplugged | Arlington Heights Park District | Arlington Heights Event Photographer

One of my favorite parts of being an event photographer is capturing the moments that bring our community together. This summer, I had the opportunity to photograph Unplug Illinois at North School Park in downtown Arlington Heights—a fun, family-friendly event that encouraged kids and adults alike to put down their screens and enjoy a morning of creativity, play, and time outdoors.

Organized as part of the statewide Unplug Illinois initiative, the event encourages families to disconnect from electronic devices and reconnect with nature, recreation, and each other through free activities hosted by local park districts.

A Morning Filled with Play

North School Park was full of energy as families explored a variety of hands-on activities designed to keep children engaged without technology. The Arlington Heights Park District hosted an arts and crafts station where children could get creative and make their own projects, while another popular stop was the face painting station, where kids transformed into butterflies, superheroes, animals, and more. Throughout the park, families enjoyed lawn games, bubbles, and interactive activities that encouraged children to run, play, and simply enjoy being outdoors. Live entertainment by Ben Tater and the Tater Tots kept the crowd smiling with music and fun, and Kona Ice was a welcome stop for families looking to cool off on a hot summer morning. It was wonderful to see children laughing, exploring, and engaging with one another instead of staring at screens—a refreshing reminder of how much fun simple, unplugged activities can be.

Highlighting Local Organizations

Community events like Unplug Illinois are about more than entertainment—they're an opportunity to showcase the organizations that help make Arlington Heights such a wonderful place to live. Families had the chance to connect with local organizations, learn about community programs, and spend quality time together in one of Arlington Heights' parks. Events like these strengthen community connections while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles for children and families. For local businesses and organizations, participating in community events is also a great way to build relationships with residents and show their involvement to the community.

Capturing the Moments That Matter

One of my favorite things about photographing family-friendly events is documenting the moments that happen naturally—the excitement on a child's face after seeing their face paint for the first time, the concentration while creating an art project, the laughter during games, and the joy of families spending uninterrupted time together. These candid interactions often become the photographs people treasure most because they capture genuine emotions and tell the story of the day exactly as it unfolded.

Why Professional Event Photography Matters

Community events happen quickly, and organizers have enough to think about without worrying about documenting every moment. Professional event photography allows event organizers, sponsors, and vendors to stay focused on their guests while creating a gallery of professional images that can be used long after the event is over. Those photographs become valuable content for websites, newsletters, social media, future event promotions, and marketing materials.

Whether you're organizing a community festival, nonprofit fundraiser, corporate event, grand opening, or family celebration, professional photography helps preserve the energy, excitement, and connections that make each event memorable.

Thank you to the Arlington Heights Park District and everyone who helped make this year's Unplug Illinois event such a fun and meaningful morning. It was a pleasure documenting a community event that celebrated creativity, connection, and the simple joy of spending time together outdoors.
