Some celebrations are more than just birthdays—they're deeply rooted in family, tradition, and the hope for a bright future. I recently had the opportunity to photograph baby R's Korean first birthday celebration, also known as a Dohl (or Doljanchi), and it was such an honor to document this meaningful milestone.
As an event photographer serving Arlington Heights, Barrington, and the Chicago suburbs, I love learning about the traditions that make every family's celebration unique. Every event tells a different story, and this one was filled with thoughtful details, joyful moments, and generations of family coming together.
What Is a Dohl Celebration?
A Dohl is the traditional Korean celebration of a child's first birthday. Families gather together to celebrate the child's health, happiness, and future while expressing gratitude for their first year of life. Dohl celebrations honor tradition while often blending modern elements with cultural customs. Many families host memorable celebrations complete with beautifully decorated tables, traditional Korean clothing called hanbok, delicious food, and meaningful ceremonies. I'm so glad I could capture such a valued event!

The Meaning Behind the Doljabi Ceremony
One of the most anticipated moments during a Dohl celebration is the Doljabi, a tradition where various objects are placed in front of the baby. The item the child chooses is believed to symbolize their future.

Common objects may include:
A book, representing wisdom or education
Money, symbolizing prosperity
A microphone, representing communication or performance
A stethoscope, symbolizing a future in medicine
A paintbrush, representing creativity
A ball, symbolizing athletic ability
String or yarn, representing a long and healthy life
Every family puts their own personal spin on the ceremony, making it one of the most memorable parts of the celebration to photograph.

Thoughtful Details That Tell the Story
One of my favorite parts of photographing events is capturing the details that often take months to plan.
The beautifully styled displays, floral arrangements, custom signage, traditional decorations, and carefully chosen colors all reflected the love and intention that went into creating this special day. These details help tell the complete story of the celebration and preserve memories that families may not have time to fully appreciate while they're busy hosting guests.
Capturing the Moments That Matter
While the traditions are beautiful, it's often the candid moments that become the most treasured photographs. Watching grandparents smile proudly, seeing parents celebrate this incredible milestone, and capturing the excitement of family and friends coming together are the moments that make these celebrations so meaningful. As an event photographer, my goal is to document the day naturally while allowing families to be fully present. Instead of worrying about taking photos themselves, parents can focus on celebrating and creating memories with the people they love.
Why Professional Photography Is Worth It for a First Birthday Celebration
A first birthday only happens once, and a Dohl celebration is often one of the largest family gatherings a child will have in their early years. Professional photography preserves not only the important traditions but also the emotions, laughter, and connections that make the day unforgettable. Long after the decorations are packed away and the cake is gone, your photographs become the lasting reminder of this incredible milestone.
