What To Wear for a Spring Family Photo Session | Arlington Heights Fall Family Photographer

Jessica M. Photography's Guide to Spring Outfits You'll Love

There’s something about the fresh blooms, soft golden light, and that feeling of a new season beginning that makes everything feel a little lighter. If you’re planning your spring family session, you might be wondering what everyone should wear. I promise — it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. My goal is always for you to feel confident, comfortable, and truly yourselves. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows in the most beautiful way. Let’s keep it simple and stress-free..

Start With a Soft, Coordinated Color Palette

The biggest tip I give my families? Coordinate — don’t match.

Spring is perfect for light, airy tones and soft color combinations. Instead of everyone wearing the same outfit, choose a palette of colors that complement each other.

Here's my formula for how to build a spring friendly palette:

  • Pick 1-2 neutral base colors - think cream, beige, and white

  • Add 2-3 accent colors - soft and pastel colors work best for spring

  • Mix textures and shades within your palette instead of matching

Choose 1–2 neutral base tones, then add 2–3 gentle accent colors. Keeping everything within a soft, cohesive palette makes your images feel timeless and natural. Softer tones photograph beautifully in natural light and blend effortlessly with blooming trees and fresh greenery.

Here are some Spring Color Palette Suggestions:

  • Sage, blush, and cream

  • White, denim, and tan

  • Lavender, dusty rose, and light grey

  • Soft peach, ivory, and muted green

  • Pink, beige, and light blue

Light Layers Create Movement & Dimension

Spring weather can shift quickly, so layers are always a good idea. But beyond practicality, layers add beautiful texture and movement to your photos.

Think:

  • Flowy dresses

  • Lightweight cardigans

  • Denim jackets

  • Linen button-downs

  • Soft knit sweaters

Movement in fabric — like a dress that flows when you walk or a cardigan that shifts as you cuddle your little ones — adds such a natural, effortless feel to your images.

Outfit Inspiration for the Whole Family

For Mom

I always recommend starting with mom’s outfit first.

  • A flowy midi or maxi dress in blush, sage, or soft blue

  • A light floral dress with a neutral cardigan

  • Cream blouse + ankle-length skirt

  • Soft knit top + light wash denim

Flowy, feminine pieces photograph so beautifully and allow you to move freely with your family.

For Dad

Simple, classic, and comfortable is key.

  • Chambray or light blue button-down + tan chinos

  • Neutral henley + lightweight jacket

  • Soft gray or cream sweater + dark denim

Avoid anything too stiff or overly formal — relaxed always feels more natural.

For Girls

Spring is perfect for soft textures and subtle prints.

  • Floral dress + cardigan

  • Pastel dress + sandals

  • Skirt + lightweight sweater

Small, delicate florals work beautifully — just keep patterns soft rather than bold.

For Boys

Clean and simple works every time.

  • Button-down shirt + khakis

  • Henley with rolled sleeves

  • Light sweater layered over a collared shirt

Neutral sneakers or loafers finish the look without drawing too much attention.

For Babies & Toddlers

Comfort matters most here.

  • Soft knit romper

  • Neutral overalls

  • Cotton dress or onesie with a cozy cardigan

If they feel good, they’ll be happy — and happy littles make for the sweetest images.

What Not to Wear for Spring Family Photos

Just as important as what to wear is knowing what to gently avoid. These guidelines help keep your photos timeless and focused on connection.

Skip Neon or Super Bright Colors

Spring sessions are light and airy. Neon pinks, bright oranges, and electric blues can reflect onto skin and overpower the softness of the season.

Muted, pastel, and earthy tones always photograph more beautifully.

Avoid Large Logos & Graphic Tees

Logos and bold wording pull attention away from faces and emotion. Family portraits are about connection — not brand names.

Stay Away From Heavy, Dark Winter Pieces

Chunky black coats, thick dark sweaters, and heavy fabrics can feel visually heavy in a fresh spring setting.

Choose breathable fabrics and lighter layers instead.

Don’t Match Exactly

Everyone in identical white shirts and jeans? Not necessary.

Coordinating tones creates depth and keeps your photos feeling natural and elevated.

Be Careful With Busy Patterns

Soft florals are lovely. Large, high-contrast prints can overwhelm an image.

If one person is wearing a pattern, keep the rest of the family in solids or subtle textures to balance it out.

Most Important: Don’t Wear Something You Don’t Feel Good In

If you’re uncomfortable, constantly adjusting, or not feeling like yourself — it will show.

When you feel confident and relaxed, you naturally lean into your family. You laugh more. You connect more. And that’s when the magic happens.

Final Tip Before Session Day

Lay everyone’s outfits out together on a bed or floor. Seeing everything side by side makes it easy to spot anything that feels too bold or out of place.

And if you’re ever unsure — send me a picture. I truly love helping you pull everything together so your session feels effortless from start to finish.

Spring family sessions are about celebrating this season of growth, love, and togetherness. I can’t wait to capture your family just as you are — joyful, connected, and beautifully you. 🌸📸
