There’s something really special about 4th of July celebrations. The mix of warm summer air, family time, backyard BBQs, fireworks, and kids running around barefoot in the grass makes the 4th of July a holiday full of fun and spectacle. This photo session that I took for Stroll Magazine's July 2026 cover was exactly that—simple, relaxed, and full of fun! This Arlington Heights family dressed in red, white, and blue and set up a backyard BBQ complete with hot dogs, lemonade, and apple pie. There was flag bunting strung in the background, and the whole evening had that easy, all-American summer feel that was so fun to photograph!

If you’re thinking about planning your own patriotic photoshoot, here are some ideas to help inspire you.
Red, White, and Blue Ofcourse!
You don’t need anything overly styled or complicated for a patriotic session. Coordinating outfits in red, white, and blue instantly sets the tone. I always recommend families lean into comfort first—flowy dresses, denim, simple tees, and bare feet in the grass will create a relaxed feel. The goal is to create light, fun and laid back summer evening vibes.
BBQ Activities
Summer is BBQ season and cookouts with the family! Setting up a simple tablescape of all-American 4th of July fare not only provides props to add flair to the photos but also gives your family an activity to do together in the photos. This creates natural (candid) moments of interaction between family members.
Some examples could be: the kids grabbing hot dogs, everyone pouring lemonade into cups, and slices of apple pie on paper plates, and kids eating watermelon. These little details are what make these sessions feel authentic, unique and memorable. A backyard BBQ naturally gives you everything you need for storytelling photos: food, movement, laughter, and togetherness.

Simple Patriotic Decor
You don’t need a fully styled setup for a patriotic shoot. In this session, flag bunting in the background was enough to tie everything together without overpowering the scene. Here are some other simple decor ideas for your photoshoot: small American flags, picnic blankets, mason jar drinks, a classic red-checkered tablecloth, or red / white / blue flowers. The key is subtlety—just enough to set the mood without distracting from your family.
Kids + Summer Fun
Some of the best moments happen when kids are simply being themselves. In this session, the kids spent time outside with mom and dad, they were excited to dig into the BBQ food, and just enjoying a beautiful summer evening. If you’re planning your own patriotic photos, think about adding elements that let kids naturally interact and play. For example, a kiddie pool is a kid favorite. Kids splashing, laughing, and cooling off in the summer heat creates the kind of candid moments families love looking back on. Bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and running barefoot through the grass are all simple ways to keep things fun and relaxed.

Sparkle into the Evening
If there’s one thing I always recommend for summer sessions, it’s timing. Golden hour—the soft light right before sunset—brings a warm glow that works perfectly to tie together a warm, summer evening. If you’re planning an evening session around the 4th of July, sparklers are such a fun way to end your shoot. They add movement, light, and a little bit of magic—especially as the sun starts to set. Kids love them, and they always bring out genuine expressions and excitement. Disclaimer: please make sure to keep safety in mind and use them in an open space with adult supervision.
Capturing Real Family Connection
The best 4th of July photoshoots are about connection. It’s the way kids play the evening way into the glow of sunset, hug their parents, laughter around the table, and the feeling of being together and having a good time. The red, white, and blue details simply help tell the American summer story.

Thinking About a 4th of July Family Session?
If you’re in Arlington Heights or the surrounding Chicago suburbs, 4th of July themed summer sessions area fun way to capture families during the summer season. They’re relaxed, meaningful, and full of personality—exactly how summer memories should feel.
